EXCITING NEWS: We're building a movement to End Bird Shooting
We unashamedly love birds - all birds - that's why we've launched this new campaign...
We unashamedly love birds. All birds. If you agree that shooting birds for fun is not ‘normal’; that bird shooting is a cruel industry propped up by raptor persecution and the mass slaughter of foxes, stoats, weasels and other wildlife; that blasting birds out of the air is incompatible with the climate and biodiversity crises - we have some exciting news.
We are making it our mission to turn bird shooting into a toxic, unacceptable relic of the past.
End Bird Shooting
At Protect the Wild we are proud of the movement we’ve built. A team of writers and campaigners, hundreds of thousands of supporters, millions of social media views. We’ve never compromised and never been afraid to say what we think. And when we’ve seen a gap, we’ve worked to fill it.
One such gap is a highly focussed, uncompromising, unafraid movement condemning bird shooting. No excuses, no middle ground, no concessions. We loathe bird shooting as much as we loathe fox hunting.
And now we’re launching a new project: End Bird Shooting.
What will End Bird Shooting look like?
End Bird Shooting sits as part of Protect the Wild but with its own distinct identity. We have launched new social media streams, started up a new Substack, and are building a brand new mini-site which will act as an information hub and a ‘clubhouse’ for all of us who want to see an end to the killing and the cruelty of shooting birds.
Social media
Protect the Wild has a huge following on social media. But we are not going to simply sign our supporters up to our new feeds. We’re going to build from scratch! Starting over is daunting, but we’ve built up a movement from nothing before and we are going to do it again.
We’ll be using powerful images and concise statements like this…
Come and see what we have to say - even better, have your say too!
We are on Facebook (click here), Bluesky (click here), X (click here), and Instagram (click here).
Substack
Substack works by giving authors the option to send blog posts as email newsletters to subscribers. We have worked extremely hard to build our Substack subscriber base. We write and send out a newsletter email almost every day, covering hunting, shooting, the badger cull, and more general environmental information. We are hugely grateful to all our subscribers.
But a new movement means lots of new content. Which potentially means more newsletters landing in the inboxes of existing subscribers. While some of our supporters will welcome that, we understand that some won’t!
Our feeling is that it’s best to make something of a ‘clean break’ from the outset and set up a new Substack to offer subscribers content specifically tailored around the ‘End Bird Shooting’ campaign.
So that’s what we’ve done…
We’ve started copying over posts from this Substack that are specifically to do with bird shooting, and we’re arranging them under four categories: Birds, Mammals, Land, and People.
For now we will duplicate posts on both the Protect the Wild and End Bird Shooting Substacks, but we think the new Substack will find its own, pro-bird, anti-shooting audience pretty quickly.
Just as with the Protect the Wild Substack, you can read everything we write for free. But if going forward you would like to receive and comment on posts/newsletters specifically about our End Bird Shooting campaign, then click the button below and join us!

A key aim of ‘End Bird Shooting’ is to ‘denormalise’ bird shooting. To make bird shooting unacceptable. Part of our work to achieve that is to help persuade businesses that supporting the ‘bloodbusiness’ of bird shooting is toxic.
In July 2024 we launched bloodbusiness.info, “a community-driven, fully searchable website that helps pro-wildlife people like ourselves choose where we spend our money based on our personal preferences.”
The website lists businesses that support or are involved with bird shooting and hunting with hounds. We’ve already listed hundreds of businesses - from pubs and hotels to retailers and service providers - that are helping make killing birds on a huge scale seem everyday and perfectly normal.
Supporters have been sending us the names of businesses they’d like us to list Over the next twelve months we will list hundreds more. Over the years we will create a huge dataset that will lay bare exactly who is enabling this obnoxious industry to thrive.

New End Bird Shooting mini-site
We are doing so much that the main Protect the Wild website is starting to bulge at the seams! That’s why we have taken the concept of linked mini-sites (like bloodbusinesss.info) and are running with it! They work, they attract different audiences, give us flexibility, and help visitors find the information they want far more easily.
In a few years we aim to have the most comprehensive information website on ending bird shooting on the internet, a one-stop hub packed with facts, investigations, animations, and campaign news exposing this industry for what it really is. But we want to get things going NOW so in the meantime we are planning a mini-site. We plan to have it launched by the start of August, and it will act as a focal point for the End Bird Shooting campaign - and as a ‘clubhouse’.
We can’t reveal all our plans just yet, but we are pouring ideas into End Bird Shooting and we think - if you feel the same way as us about shooting anyway - that you will love it.
End Bird Shooting
We have been saying for years that bird shooting is:
Catastrophic for animals - not just for the millions of birds killed by 'sportsmen' each year but also for the mammals that are snared and trapped in huge numbers on shooting estates.
Terrible for us - because of the distress it causes us, the noise and nuisance for people living by shoots, and the pollution caused by burning thousands of acres of moorland.
An environmental disaster - our biodiversity is crashing and our climate is changing rapidly, yet the shooting industry thinks it can just keep killing wildlife and altering habitats as it pleases.
IT HAS TO END. Join us and make sure that it does.
