How Your Support Is Powering a New Era for British Wildlife

The past few months have been packed with activity, progress and impact across all areas of our work. From Parliament to protest lines, from legal groundwork to frontline support, Protect the Wild has never been busier or more determined.

Ending the Badger Cull

We took the campaign to end the Badger cull straight to Parliament, where we heard encouraging news that the cull’s days are finally numbered. We are now pushing for the Government to bring it to a full and immediate end.

In Oxford, I confronted the academics behind the cull and even spoke face to face with Sir Professor Charles Godfray, the lead scientist overseeing whether the cull has “worked.” It was a rare opportunity to challenge the cull at its intellectual roots and demand accountability. To remind those in power that we will not stop until meaningful action is taken for wildlife, I completed a 24-hour continuous walk around Parliament, a symbolic act of endurance showing that we are here for the long run.

Ending Hunting with Hounds

At the time of writing, over 1,500 of our brilliant supporters are helping to deliver almost one million leaflets to homes across the country in support of the campaign to end hunting. We have kept the pressure on the Government through our viral cub hunting animation narrated by Chris Packham, which has been seen by millions, and through the hand-in of our huge anti-hunt petition at Downing Street (now signed by over 215,000 people). More than 15,000 people have now contacted their MP through our new online tool, calling for an end to hunting once and for all.

We have also continued to back direct action on the ground by providing grants for equipment to saboteur and monitor groups who stand up to hunts every week. As well as publishing a damning annual report into the activities of hunts alongside a first of its kind report looking into the welfare of foxhounds.

And in the coming weeks we have an explosive story lined up exposing how over a million pounds of taxpayer money and subsidies have been pocketed by hunts across the country.

Collaboration, Advocacy and Fundraising

Our work does not stop at hunting or badgers. We joined our friends at Freedom for Animals outside SeaLife London, demanding freedom for the 15 captive penguins. My colleague Charlotte also spent two weeks in Cyprus, documenting the illegal trapping of migratory songbirds and helping raise more than £8,000 towards a thermal drone to aid future investigations.

We helped pressure the Durrell Trust to end deer stalking on its land, sponsored the inaugural National Pigeon Advocacy Conference, where we built new alliances and campaign plans, and I interviewed Zack Polanski, Leader of the Green Party, to find out what the Greens will do to protect British wildlife.

Looking Ahead: A New Era of Action

Over the next year, we are doubling down on our mission to bring about real, lasting change for animals. This means launching more targeted pressure campaigns against corporations, landowners and institutions that care about their reputation. It also means continuing to hold the Government to account until it ends hunting with hounds once and for all and brings a complete end to the Badger cull.

For the past six months, we have been working on something absolutely massive that will shake up the future of bloodsports in this country. Alongside that, we are helping to establish a new legal entity dedicated to prosecuting those who break the law and abuse animals, marking a significant step forward for animal justice in the UK.

We will continue to support direct action groups and frontline activists through our equipment fund programme, and our mental health initiative Protect the Mind is now providing monthly support to around a dozen people across the animal protection movement, helping them continue their vital work.

Standing Up for Animals Every Time

Whether it is calling out the Guga slaughter and exposing the suffering through FOIs, teaming up with Manchester Hunt Sabs to expose a hotel hosting a hunt ball, or mobilising over 10,000 people to contact LBC after a presenter joked about a trapped fox starving to death, we take every instance of cruelty or neglect seriously and we act.

Updates like this are a reminder of how much we have achieved and where we are heading. None of it would be possible without you.
