Labour to pursue a ban on trail hunting "early next year"
A big update for you on the campaign to end hunting with hounds. Earlier this week, DEFRA Minister Angela Eagle MP spoke in Parliament and confirmed the Government’s commitment to enacting a full ban on trail hunting.
While we had originally anticipated that the public consultation would take place before the New Year, it’s positive to now have a clearer timeframe for when this will happen. It’s up to us to keep the pressure on and make sure the consultation takes place as soon as possible, and that it leads to a genuine end to hunting with hounds.
We’re urging all supporters to use our quick and easy Contact Your MP tool. In just a few clicks, you can send a prewritten letter to your MP, calling on them to push the Government for a firm timetable on when the Hunting Act will finally be strengthened.
You can read Angela Eagle’s full statement below:
“This Government is committed to enacting a ban on trail hunting in line with our manifesto commitment. Work to determine the best approach for doing so is ongoing and a consultation seeking views on how to deliver a full ban will be held early next year.
The nature of trail hunting makes it very difficult to do safely. The use of large packs of hounds reduces the control huntsmen have, putting wild mammals, household pets and even members of the public at risk.
Trail hunting also provides a convenient cover for those seeking to participate in illegal hunting activities by obscuring their intention and enabling the inevitable chasing of animals to be labelled as ‘accidental’. This is why we want an effective, enforceable ban that truly protects our wildlife, countryside, and rural communities.”

This is good news! Just signed the petition/sent an email to my Labour MP! Bit disappointing that the consultation will be done early next year instead of towards the end of this year but considering how busy most people will be over the holiday season, maybe more people will take part in the consultation to end smokescreen "trail" hunting if it is early next year instead. As long as this consultation helps properly stop barbaric hunting of animals with hounds for good, then it will be worth it!!
Great news and not before time. Thanks for the update PTW 🙏🦊
