Can someone with an ounce of brain, explain to this "uneducated average joe" why kill birds/wildlife, what is the point, what thrill must the "killers/murderers" get, does it make them feel "tough", does it make them feel manly", do they think they are doing the "birds/wildlife" a faviour (one fox hunter did say the fox enjoys it) what a gormless "upper class" TWAT", I suppose now he's an "M P", what right have these "DISGUSTING PERVERTS" got to "KILL" our "NATURE'S WILDLIFE", these "HUNTERS/KILLERS" of our wildlife are "SICK" and "MENTALLY DERANGED", they should be in an "INSTITUTION" "HATE THEM"
Talking about these mentally deranged people, that I hate with a strong passion . I was so sickened when I saw a Tennessee Walking horse show the other night. Those mentally deranged, sadistic , upper class twats were proudly sitting on a handicapped horse ( that they accomplished) so the horse will painfully prance around the ring, because it's front legs are carry heaver blocks with chains. Not only that 90% of the riders where these FAT F.....KS. The back legs are usually broken. I was so mad, furious, just beyond angry. I envisioned them being shot in the head off those maimed horses. I have no faith in this world that an event so heinously , inhumane can still not be illegal. My only relief is seeing all you like minded, animal loving people here making comments and the disgust we share for the abuses and killers. So thankful for all the hard , dangerous work the Sabs do.
Wow! Fascinating article! It gives the impression of hope! It has obviously been going on a while and starting to show benefits. Lets hope they get to control even more land and never water down their promises with lobbyists from CA swirling round to bite!
My goodness, a big thank you to Stockdale, what a revelation. This warmed my heart.
It seems too good to be true but I had seen something like this on one of the country programs on tv and at the time didn't realise exactly what they were doing. Let's hope they continue to buy more and more land and have amazing success and keep up with their projects.
To be clear - Scotland is is officially BTB free and has been since 2009. There is no BTB reservoir in the wild and it will stay that way unless someone moves in a cow infected with BTB. Pre- and post-movement cattle testing and controls keep Scotland TB free. Decades back a RTA badgers in Scotland used to be tested - none had BTB. Scottish Badgers' website explains https://www.scottishbadgers.org.uk/infographics/10-cattle-5/
Although this is fantastic news that bird shooting, fox hunting/"culling" and badger "culling" has ended (hopefully permanently) on this land and I give them a great well done for that, they do also need to ban deer hunting/"culling" too. The ONLY reason why deers are overpopulated is because humans wiped out their natural and once native predators: wolves, bears and lynxes.
There is NO excuse to murder deers for so called "population control" as there are many better alternatives that don't involve humans trophy hunting them, such as 1. Reintroducing natural predators such as Lynxes or wolves (who are extremely shy of humans) to help naturally bring down their population and stop the deers from overgrazing. The charity "Rewild UK" is in full support of and is trying to make this a reality too: https://www.rewildingbritain.org.uk/why-rewild/reintroductions-key-species/key-species/eurasian-lynx
(For reference, I do not agree with the recent illegal release of 4 tamed lynxes into the Cairngorms though. "Releasing" tamed lynxes who have not been prepared for life in the wild is cruel and is NOT the way for reintroductions to be carried out. As a result, I know 1 of the 4 lynxes very sadly didn't survive as a result. All reintroductions do have to be lawful and well planned out by joint organisations.)
Lastly, are humans (who are THE MOST overpopulated (can anyone name any wild mammal species that numbers anywhere near 8 billion?), invasive and environmentally destructive species of all) ever "culled" to bring down our numbers and help order "balance"? A classic example of Speciesism.
Birth control for deer AND humans, as well as properly ending human immigration! Sorry if that offends anyone but there is a need to get real about that 'elephant in the room'!
THE WORLD IS GOING BACKWARDS, WE WILL END KILLING ALL WILDLIFE WHETHER ON LAND OR SEA FOR FOOD, BECAUSE THE WORLD CANNOT SUSTAIN THE POPULATIONS AS THEY KEEP ON GROWING.
I think that the argument to cull deer for population control falls flat when you consider the numbers of sheep and their devastating impact upon flora, denuding the landscape of any saplings that get beyond 2mm. In addition, the soy pellet feeds associated with deforestation. The fact is that meat and dairy is unsustainable and we must accelerate towards a plant based food system and habitat restoration to grow biodiversity. Also, I know estates that actively breed deer 🤔
True Cara. They just have to look at the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone. It has made an impact on the whole ecosystem recovery. Wolves were exterminated. Deer, elk, bison ate everything , weren't killed by wolves, so they multiplied. Wolves and greenery returned, deer population dwindled to a sustainable level. Stop killing foxes, they'll snack on deer - hurts to say deer are too big, so the little ones will get it. Give deer a jab to become infertile. Done. I'm so against trophy hunters, I wouldn't let them within 5 feet of the property. Don't give them any satisfaction of killing something. Humans should stop medalling with nature. Let them live and they'll fix it themselves.
Very good point and I completely agree with you Fiona! I am all for either birth control or the reintroduction of natural predators (admittedly, killing still happens with predator reintroductions but at least that way, humans are no longer the ones killing and interfering and it is, sadly, what would naturally happen in nature without our "presence" anyhow). Alongside Lynxes and foxes, I also recently came across this article here too: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/feb/17/wolves-reintroduction-to-highlands-could-help-native-woodlands-to-recover-says-study
If "cullers" didn't like murdering (trophy hunting), then why would there be such a backlash to the above proposal from "deer stalkers" in particular??! Good on you for not allowing sick "trophy hunters" on your property too Fiona 👍!!
Yes I totally agree Cara, it was unsettling reading this part. Perhaps PTW can give advise to Stockdale of humane ways to keep the deer population down, i.e. birth control.
I agree. I was excited to read this.... until I got to the part about controlling deer population. As others have said, surely birth control is the way to go?
I'm glad that bird shooting has been banned on this estate. The obscenity of BREEDING birds to shoot them AND killing their natural predators so some fuckwit with a gun can blast them out of the sky for perverted pleasure is unsupportable. That members of the royal family still do this is shameful; they deserve to be abolished. We need a Referendum on this, as on so many things.
So, some progress, but killing deer rather than restricting their birth-rate needs rethinking.
Hmmm... investors, carbon credits and land management. Sounds awful. Its good that shooting and hunting is barred but aren't we just swapping one bunch of rich people for another. Jury's out on this for me..
PRESIDENT TRUMPS SON HAS SHOT AN ENDANGERED BIRD IN ITALY, (SEE CARE2 PETITION SITE). PEOPLE WITH MONEY CAN GO TO SOMEONE ELSE AND PAY TO SHOOT WILDLIFE ON THEIR LANDS. PEOPLE WITH TOO MUCH MONEY CAN GET WHATEVER THEY WANT.
I wonder where we are with avian flu and shooting estate pheasant/partridge populations? Could it be that that has such a devastating effect on populations - especially on those estates rearing their own imported birds (which I suspect now is nearly all of them) - that shooting becomes commercially unviable?
If so it would be a kind of consolation for the desolation wrought by this awful disease.

I completely agree and feel the same way James!! I'm afraid I honestly can't explain or understand it either.

Well done lets hope others follow suit 🙏

That is absolutely brilliant! Well done Scotland! Thank you for sharing this with us.

These links here show why humans killing animals for "population control" so very rarely ever works because of the "Vacuum Effect": 1. https://www.alleycat.org/resources/the-truth-about-the-vacuum-effect/

To be honest, I don't believe there is any such thing as "responsible" or "professional 'cullers" either: https://vegfaqs.com/how-do-vegans-feel-about-hunting-for-meat/

Totally agree with you Rosemary 👍
I, personally, fully agree Rosemary!

Big step in the right direction but I'm not okay with farming animals for any reason, even regeneratively.
