It needs the locals of the area to rise up and make a very big, loud protest against this. They voted these people in, obviously a very biased council! Legally? Any laws being broken? Worth investigating! Never did trust Lib Dems, for me, this is true to form.

I don't have a facebook account so cannot comment on any but I can read some content. On Winchester City Council facebook a brave person has already made the following comment which I was able to copy.

Louis Gauci

SHAME ON YOU! Wildlife defenders campaign every year to try to stop Boxing Day hunt parades, but Winchester City Council has announced that not only will it close a road for the Hampshire Hunt, but that police will be deployed to protect the parade.

It is astounding that in 2024, the archaic bloodsport of fox hunting is not only being celebrated but is being supported by councils across the country.

Anyone with a facebook account, please bombard them!

Will advise my Libdem MP about this and ask her is it the !ibdens' policy to support hunts!

Better still, tell them they should prepare to find new jobs after the next election!

B******s.

My mp is lib dem and he appears to be anti all forms of animal abuse and says he will support the governments ban if it ever happens. (I think)

Oh well done you. Hope you keep it up. I am too old for facebook, seems too complicated for safety, but if you understand it and feel safe, I am certain it can be used to great advantage, - for this protest for example!

Total contempt of the law and the majority opinion that fox hunting is cruel, barbaric and from the dark ages. One can only conclude that the councillors are “hunters” themselves. Arseholes!!!!

Well, well, well, I think it's time for an email to the "SICK" "DISGUSTING" "COWARDLY" "winchester city council", with my usually kind words, (no swearing it would not look good), I do not think it will change their minds, lets all "WILDLIFE LOVERS" send "EMAILS" to them.

SHAME on you Winchester council 🤬🤬🤬!! I sincerely hope that there are loads of anti hunt supporters there like us to boycott this and show that council how wrong this decision Is!! Is there anything we can do Protect the Wild to help boycott them?! I am afraid that I am not surprised by the lib Dems on this as I remember that they had practically nothing in their election manifesto for animals at all (they had just 2 things), including NOTHING on abhorrent hunting as Protect the Wild rightfully pointed out!

Is there any plans for starting a petition? We all need to remind the treacherous Lib Dems that there will be another election one day and they will be punished. Not learning from the Tories people!

Expand full comment

Absolutely disgusting, can we do a petition against this council.

Is this a joke they should be a shamed of their selves.

I HAVE SAID THIS BEFORE, THE POLICE ARE ALWAYS OUT IN FORCE TO PROTECT THE HUNTS,(WHEN IT WAS LEGAL), BUT THEY DONT SEEM TO BE AROUND WHEN THE SABS ARE BEING ATTACK? COULD IT BE THAT THE ESTABLISHMENT CONTROL LAW AND ORDER?

Fairly obvious to me that £££££ are involved!

At the risk of being read by the 'wrong' people, a plan like I made totally off the cuff once when I was a lot, lots younger.

The older fogies on here may remember the film Patton, starring George C Scott years ago.

A story broke just before release by some sound crew on the set. It claimed that the Director had real explosives strapped to the bellies of some horses for effect.

Well, along came the Royal Premiere in Leicester Square and some sneaky chap telephoned the theatre that an explosive device had been planted in the cinema in protest.

Premiere cancelled.

Something along those lines maybe?

That "sneaky chap" had a very clever and good idea 💡!! Good idea and thank you for mentioning that Ray. W!! I do hope though that that "director" was caught and jailed for trying to do that despicable and aghastly cruelty to those poor horses 🤬🤬🤬!!

This is the response I got from Winchester council.

Dear Ms McKay,

Thank you for your note.

I understand your concern about how some hunts have abused trail hunting in the past - and can assure you that no decision the council has made has done anything to enable this to happen in this case.

The decision to close a small section of the public highway for two hours on Boxing Day was made in response to an application by the hunt - given the number of people likely to be in the area and the resulting need to restrict traffic - and decided by council officers after consulting with the Police and Hampshire Highways. No councillors were involved in the decision. No council resources will be involved in the closure.

The Council has also not directed the police to attend - not least because the City Council has not had its own police force to direct since 1943 - and any operational decisions with regard to policing are made by Hampshire Constabulary - and the City Council has no power to direct them on this. As far as I'm aware they've made no decision to attend in this case at the current time.

The Council also has no involvement in anything that the hunt may do before or after the meet in Alresford. Obviously, if any criminal acts are committed on private land following the meeting in Alresford, I would hope that they are vigorously prosecuted by the police and the courts.

Best wishes,

Martin Tod
