I received this response from BDS below.

They are a charity but my concerns were how they manage the people who go on their courses to 'Manage' the deer.

Dear Sharon

Thank you for your enquiry, and of course your concern for deer.

There is no doubt that where deer populations are allowed to flourish to excess this may have severe consequences for their overall health, as well as being detrimental to farming, forestry and the environment along with an increased hazard to human health from deer/vehicle collisions.

Provided it is being carried out with the permission of the landowner or their representative, culling may take place as long as a comprehensive range of legal requirements, which include closed seasons (set to ensure that female deer with dependent young are not killed), permitted firearms, and the times of day when it is conducted, are observed. Otherwise as long as those conducting the culling have the appropriate permission to do so, possess relevant firearms licenses and are acting within the law they will be fully within their rights to do so. There are also very strict rules regarding how shot venison must be inspected, handled and prepared before it is allowed to pass into the human food chain as an ethically sourced, healthy and sustainable product.

Wherever culling is considered necessary the British Deer Society looks for it to be carried out in a humane, efficient, and respectful manner with appropriate attention given to public safety. For this reason we provide training to promote the very highest standards of Best Practice.

The BDS does not support the hunting of deer with hounds, and in all cases where the law is broken we stand ready to advise and support the relevant authorities. You can find a statement which goes into more detail on our website here BDS Position Statements - The British Deer Society.

I hope that this is helpful.

Hunting in any form, whether Deer or Fox, Hares and the poor semi tame Partridge, is a blight on a modern society. I do think that this blood letting on any living creature shows that man has not evolved far enough! I feel sick and disgusted that human beings can take pleasure in any of this. The Government must act and bring it all to an end. People will still kill but then the Police must do their job.

'Deer hunting is now so toxic that no one can ignore it'. All hunting of defenceless wildlife for 'sport' or 'fun' is so toxic that it makes normal people with a sense of morality and compassion for living things feel sick with disgust, anger and shame that it still goes on in our country. The hunters themselves are highly toxic psycho-sadists who take pleasure in cruelty and bloodlust. They belong in institutions for the morally sick and dangerous such as Broadmoor.

Some of these killers sit in the Houses of Parliament, especially the House of Lords where they do their best to foil legislature that would protect animals and spoil the 'sport' of fellow psycho-sadists. This is intolerable. With a General Election in the offing we are entitled to know about the attitudes of every Parliamentary candidate toward the hunting and killing of wildlife.

We can do our own research on prospective MPs as individuals, but even better would be a publishable list of names of those who are involved in or support hunts and the huntscum fraternity. If the anti-hunt charities collaborated on this and drew media attention to it, many people would wish to see a copy of the list. Personally, I would be prepared to buy a copy if the charities asked for a fee to cover costs and raise money for the fightback.

As for the House of Unelected Lords, maybe the elected politicos would start to think twice about nominating huntscum to sit in that overstuffed chamber for fear of angering their constituents.

I have witnessed (accidentally whilst holidaying in Dulverton) the manic, cruel, deprivation these wildlife murderers will stoop to in order to chase for hours, brutally murder and then butcher these wild majestic creatures. God knows what is going through their minds to partake in such heinous practices. The majority of people cannot by any means understand why this is still in this day and age allowed to carry on.

I actually feel "strangely" sorry for any man/woman, who go hunting for "WILD ANIMALS", for "SPORT", "hang on did i say SPORT", "YES" I did, lets hunt that "DEER", that "FOX", and don't forget that "ELEPHANT", "LION", "TIGER", "BEAR", to many to say, let the "FUCKING", "SUB HUMAN", "PIECES" of "SCUM" "SHIT", "HUNTING PEOPLE" fall off their horse and hopefully break their "FUCKING" neck, they all should be "HUNTED" down and "EXTERMINATED", now that would be "GREAT", that would put a huge "SMILE" on my face, It breaks my "HEART" to see, think about, all the "WILD ANIMAL" "MURDER", that goes on across our "PLANET", "WILD ANIMALS" "PLANET" "ALSO", wild animals are not on earth, to be for human "SPORT, I am an uneducated 84year old, but have the "UNIVERSITY", of life, I fail to see how the "DEATH", "MURDER" of any animal, gives any form "PLEASURE", I just don't get it, I suppose, people need no "HEART", "SOUL" or "MIND", "YES" that must be it. "ANIMAL LOVER"

I just hope something is done very soon to stop the persecution of all our wildlife. The scumbags who hunt the poor animal’s down and kill them are absolutely evil. Why doesn’t the government stop this with a hunting act that has some substance, and force the police to implement arrests and convictions of the evil perpetrators. I pray common sense and compassion prevails.

Sick, vile and cowardly. I cannot put in to words what I wish for to these scumbags. There should be an animal court of rights with a trusted authority in charge. Whatever you put into this life you will get back.
