Several weeks ago we were contacted by one of our supporters who asked if our Equipment Fund was only for monitor and anti-cull groups or whether we supported animal rescues too - and if we did would we contact Gray Taylor who runs Wirral Fox Rescue…
We most certainly do support animal rescues. Our Equipment Fund (and indeed the Support Network it sits inside), is designed to ‘empower people working to protect British wildlife’ - and that certainly includes rescues.
Of course we don’t just arbitrarily hand out grants though. We speak to everyone we plan to support before committing to anything. So we contacted Gray and he told us all about the rescue, the fact that he’d just achieved charitable status as part of Pawprints (reg charity number: 1176869), and we talked about foxes. A lot of foxes! Wow, the man is busy…
We also checked (as you’d expect) that he ran a no-kill rescue, and he told us how returning healthy foxes back to the wild was the best part of the job - but if they were too injured or they couldn’t look after themselves Gray would always find space for them at the rescue.
We asked him to get back to us when he knew what he needed, and after a few days he asked for a professional-level fox cage and a solar-powered trail cam. A few calls later on our end, and the equipment was on its way to the Wirral.
Thanks to Protect the Wild, our new trap and camera will go out into the field straight away, and will help us to identify and treat more foxes who are needlessly suffering. We are so grateful for this support. The equipment will provide us with more resources with which to help these beautiful animals.
There's a real issue with mange at the moment, and it's entirely preventable. We'll have many foxes in and out of our new trap, we can treat them, and they'll able to enjoy their lives without the suffering caused by mange. We'll also use the trap to safely catch foxes who need admitting to our hospital.
We'll use the camera to monitor foxes and traps in the field, but we can also use the device to watch our soft-release enclosures. It's a godsend at such a busy time.
A massive thank you to Protect the Wild from us.

Gray thanked us and we want to give a massive thank you to our supporters!
Our content is free but we do offer the option of paid subscriptions to help us support the groups we work with. They start from as little as £3.50/month and any money we receive from those paid subscriptions is ringfenced and used to support people like Gray, selfless volunteers on the front line protecting wildlife. Supporting real people protecting real animals and making a real difference on the ground where it matters most.
As a subscriber I am really pleased to see how much good we can all do together. Come on everyone, subscribe and let’s finish the fox murders once and for all. 👏👏
Well done PTW, so glad to be part of this very worthy cause.
