I have signed this - thank you for all that you are doing on it. I am personally disgusted that the new Labour government have not already stopped killing badgers as they promised. They won’t be getting my vote again, or possibly ever as things stand. I have been a life long Labour supporter.
I do completely agree with you Protect the Wild and I have already signed your new government petition a few days ago and wish you the best of luck with it PTW 🤞!! As far as I am concerned, Labour has already broken their "promise" to "end" the badger cull 😿💔🤬🤬🤬!!! I have also already signed your other petition PTW, Born free's petition, the badger trust's petition and the Avaaz petition too! One other note too PTW, I don't think it is solely to do with the farming community and the barbaric badger "cull" being sensitive issues as to why you had such a difficult time with the petitions committee as I get the impression this new petition committee team is far stricter (almost unreasonable in my opinion, I am afraid) on many of the petitions being published than the last petition committee team was, as 2 of my petitions that I started on the government website (1. "Bring in a bill now to properly phase out and ban trail hunting by October 2025": https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/700287 and 2. "Properly address and stop the shortage of vets in the UK": https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/700290) were both rejected. The 1st one because by the time they had got around to check mine, another similar petition had been created. I signed that one here: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/700320 and the 2nd petition was rejected because apparently "Properly address and stop the shortage of vets in the UK" wasn't clear enough in what I was asking the government to do??!!! The petitions committee is meant to also let you know if they reject your petition via email but I never received an email about the 2nd petition. I only found out when I looked through the "Rejected petitions" section and saw it there. I am awaiting to see what they do with my snares ban petition. I am very, very glad that your petition to stop the abhorrently barbaric and completely uneccessary badger "cull" has managed to get through at last though 🦡❤️💖💖!!
Hi Cara. Thanks for a very illuminating comment. There does seem to be a difference (a tightening up perhaps) but as we have another petition in the works at the moment (on snares incidentally) I thought it 'politic' to not wind them up too much in this post :)
Hello Charlie. I completely understand that. My apologies if my comment above did turn into a bit of an angry rant, it is just so very, very frustrating, as I know you can understand, on how I want to help as much as I can to stop/change things for the better but get knocked back. Pease know that I will also sign your snares petition too when it, hopefully🤞, goes live. Please keep up the great work that you do and I wish you the best of luck with both the badger "cull" petition and the snares petition 👍👏✊❤️💖!
HAVE SIGNED THE PETITION, BUT AS WE ALL KNOW, THERE ARE POLITICANS FROM DIFFERENT PARTIES WHO WILL DO THEIR UPMOST TO STOP THE CULL, AND WANT IT TO CONTINUE, OTHERWISE THEY FEAR THEY WILL BE VOTED OUT AT THE ELECTION.
First, thank you for all that you are doing to try to stop the cull. Shocking and incompetent is an understatement for the whole appalling strategy by the Government.
What the Gov agencies have done is indefensible in the light of the science and with respect to animal welfare and biodiversity. They have also cultivated and grown a new wave of wildlife killers under the guise of ‘pest control companies. Given the precise numbers of badgers culled may not tally with the numbers trapped or the number of setts ‘emptied’ HOW DO WE KNOW THAT LIVE BADGERS ARE NOT BEING TAKEN FOR BADGER BAITING BY SOME OF THOSE INVOLVED IN THE CONTRACTS? Do we know how closely the companies and individuals contracted to carry out the killings are being monitored?
It would also be interesting to know if any of the previous Government’s ministers, or the current Government’s ministers who support the cull, have links to/ shares in, the companies contracted to carry out the cull.
HOW DO WE KNOW THAT LIVE BADGERS ARE NOT BEING TAKEN FOR BADGER BAITING BY SOME OF THOSE INVOLVED IN THE CONTRACTS? Do we know how closely the companies and individuals contracted to carry out the killings are being monitored? these are questions I have asked on many occasions. I found this information on the badger trust page:
Is the level of training and monitoring of cull contractors adequate for animal welfare purposes?
The vast majority of badgers are killed without any monitoring at all. Since 2014, the cull has been significantly expanded but the level of monitoring by Natural England field operatives has continued to decline (in 2020 this was 0.58% of all shooting events). Monitoring no longer includes the time taken for badgers to die, but does show numbers of ‘missed’, ‘wounded and lost’ and ‘not retrieved’. Self reporting of these events by contractors is much lower than monitoring figures. In 2020 184 shooting attempts (of 31,303) were monitored:
163 were shot and retrieved, with 20 assumed missed,
123 were deemed instant kills,
38 were not instant kills and 8 of those died after moving away a short distance
There were 22 follow up shots
3 were lost (two of which were found dead the next morning)
The total ‘shot at but not retrieved’ was 21. This equates to 11.49%, but on average contractors report this figure to be around 1.5%.
