The more groups out there the better, we must help look after them all. The monitors/Sabs are the frontline for us all. Another new group very welcome.
Well done South Thames Hunt Sabs. Keep up your good work. I hope the equipment from Protect the Wild will help in your endeavours.
On a point of concern, I note the poor horse forced to gallop with a red coated extremely fat and heavy lump of wobbling blubber sitting on his back must be suffering with back pain. Surely this is another act of animal cruelty. LOL
A close friend of mine gave up riding when she put on weight specifically because she loved horses and felt a guilt about it. She now just cares lovingly for her horse but does not do the exercising. Some riding schools now will weigh potential riders and refuse them if they do not have a horse 'up to weight'. Sadly, there is yet another gap in animal welfare laws that permits anyone of any size to get on a horse despite welfare charities having a 'calculation' for this. There is also no protection against 'riding under the influence' as we witness with hunts! Alcohol increases aggression, and likely more aggressive riding. Horses are definitely short of welfare protection!
You are so right Roger. Sadly there are no laws of protection, though studies have been done in UK and USA. Here's an extract:
Deb Bennet PHD and founder of Equine Studies Institute ran a weight carry test on horses and her findings concluded that the 'total weight of rider AND tack must not exceed 250lbs'. She added, "There is no horse alive, of any breed, build, anywhere, that should go more than a few minutes with more weight on it's back than this".
Dr Hayley Randle also conducted a study with Emma Halliday to suggest guild lines be put in place to protect horses from overweight riders. They found that the health issue on the horse from riders who are too heavy can become 'extreme quickly' - from early arthritis, joint issues, back issues, and laminitis, to behavioural issues such as bucking and rearing to relieve pressure of the weight and try to shift weight to a more comfortable position.
Yes, 20% is a guideline although in some places it's only 10%. I would expand this a bit for horsey experience and say that the weight a horse carries is actually eased by skilful, knowledgeable riders who are themselves physically fit. Part of the skill is to balance and manage your own weight off the horse. This does not apply obviously to novices and those who just use the horse as a machine!
Bless you and thank you so much South Thames Hunt Sabs, Protect the Wild and to everyone here who donates and/or supports you 👍✊👏❤️💖💖!! I am curious though on 1 thing, are barbaric hunts on rabbits also sabbed?
TALKING ABOUT HEAVY WEIGHTS, WHAT ABOUT THE POOR DONKEYS WHO HAVE TO CARRY HEAVY LOADS, WHETHER IT IS HUMANS OR WORK MATERIALS. AND THIS HAPPENS IN ALOT OF COUNTRIES.
Agree David. Even less welfare than here! Their only help comes via charities and of course pressure on politicians through petitions etc. The world is still a wicked place for animals, no escaping human greed, apathy and lack of empathy!
MY PARTNER DONATES TO SAFE HAVE FOR DONKEYS(, BASED IN ISRAEL), WHICH SUPPORTS AND HELPS DONKEYS AND THEIR OWNERS BY VETANARY CARE AND TEACHING THEM HOW TO LOOK AFTER THE THEM. ALSO SHE DONATES TO BROOKE ANOTHER DONKEY CHARITY WHICH WAS STARTED BY A LADY AFTERC THE FIRST WORLD WAR, WANTING THE ANIMALS TO BE CARED AND LOOKED AFTER.
I would so love to be over there (I"m in Canada) to be on the front lines with the Sabs. I could let out this crazy hatred I've had, and get satisfaction in nailing them. I love you South Thames Hunt Sabs (all sabs for that matter) you're an inspirations and have renewed my faith in (some) of the human race. You go Sabs smash those hunts (more appropriate c--ts) hard.
Best of luck and we are with you 100%. You are all so brave and together we will continue to beat the vile, pathetic and useless individuals who still think they have the right to cruelty on defenseless wildlife...they are truly delusional...

They should have weight restrictions in place before "anyone " can get on a horse. Even my garden waste bag has ! Well said Roger.

Thanks Rosemary that’s very interesting. I Dont suppose the fat lump would know or even care.
Thanks Lorraine I like you comments too.

Very true Rosemary! I believe I also read somewhere that a horse (of any breed) can safely carry up to 20% of their bodyweight but not any more than that. I know for donkey rides, some are rightfully beginning to not let anyone on the donkeys unless they are under a certain weight too: https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/seaside-donkey-ride-owner-now-33135348 and: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/clww55yvvr7o

I completely agree with you Rosemary! That is very true again.
