A few days ago I sent an email asking that you add your name to Protect the Wild’s petition to end the badger cull. A whopping 3,000 of you signed it in just 24 hours and it took the total to well over 30,000!
I said that I would be going to DEFRA to hand in the petition and yesterday that’s what I did. So… what happened?
Perhaps unsurprisingly the security outside the DEFRA offices at Marsham Street (London) told me nobody would come out to actually physically accept the petition. Instead I was instructed to send it by post!
DEFRA couldn’t even be bothered to send someone outside. But are we really surprised? Labour promised in their manifesto that they would end the “ineffective” badger cull if they got into power. And yet here we are four weeks later having to tell our supporters and the public that not only is badger culling set to continue but they won’t even engage with us on the issue.
A few days ago Baroness Hayman of Ullock confirmed that the culling licences (issued by the Conservative Government) will still be honoured. To our knowledge there is absolutely no reason why this Government cannot overturn/scrap the licences. It was easy enough for them to scrap the Rwanda deal on their first day in the office but when it comes to the badger cull we’re being told that nothing can be done and to go easy on Labour as they have just got into office.. In the meantime innocent badgers will be shot dead so to appease the farming lobbyists.
How many more badgers need to be slaughtered before this senseless cull is brought to an end? The answer is likely tens of thousands.
Labour are betraying the public and they are betraying badgers. Well over 200,000 badgers have now been slaughtered since badger culling started. On 15th March we published the below article, ‘Sunak now wants all the badgers dead’ and it’s hard to see what’s really changed since then..
Needless to say we will continue to fight tooth and nail for the protection of badgers and to end the cull. From helping with legal action behind the scenes and keeping you in the know, to holding more demonstrations outside DEFRA, and assisting the brilliant activists protecting badgers in the field. This is just the beginning.
I will continue to join Betty Badger outside the DEFRA offices each week to remind them that the public wants to see an end to the badger cull.
Thank you for your continued support.
Rob

A recent vaccination programme for TB was carried out on badgers in Cornwall, apparently with a 100% success rate. As a former farmer and landowner (no cull allowed on our land) I’d like to think I understand the issue quite well. I fail to understand why the NFU, DEFRA and the government (of whatever colour) can’t adopt a vaccination programme nationwide. Oh, of course I would cost more …….
Please give Betty a massive high five and let her know how much we appreciate her tenacity and selflessness!❤️
