I believe the choice of words is wrong 'badgers are being killed to protect the dairy industry'. That is the pretence , but as pointed out in the text, most TB infection is cow to cow. Better would be: ' Badgers are being killed on the PRETENCE of protecting the dairy industry'

Badgers are lovely love the badgers that visit my garden and foxes why can't humans like them they have a right to live their lives too.

Why oh why are we not vaccinating the cattle - because of some idiotic "TB free status"? Everybody with half a brain knows that this is rubbish. Our cattle are riddled with TB because of appallingly bad farming practices. The government needs to take this seriously instead of scapegoating our precious wildlife .

I am so upset by the way our animals are treated by some the Farmers and their stockmen and also by the Abbatoirs who treat them abomnably, killing them in front of the animals next to them who sense the fear and smell the blood and not stunning them properly.

Expand full comment

Perhaps it should be law that when farmers send their animals to abattoirs, they should accompany them and watch the entire process of what happens to their animals. instead of forgetting them as soon as the ramp is up and the cheque arrives! Some farmers claim to love and respect their animals, if true, some may give up after that. Don't claim to 'love' them farmers, it is just blood money!

You're so right Susie , the whole system is rotten and.needs to be totally reformed.

Dairy farmers are all my ass, they have got to be the most vile greedy pests on this planet besides them blaming our badgers (unjustified) they willingly cull newborn male calves every dairy cow is subjected having her off spring taken away to produce milk milk that humans steal to satisfy their selfish selves theres loads of dairy alternatives out there i for 1 choose over animal products it saves a baby it can save a badger these farmers need stoppibg GREED OVER COMPASSION is all it is SICKENING

You are completely correct that many of them sadly often are Joeann. However, have you heard of ahimsa dairies at all? Here is a link: https://westmidlands.ahimsamilk.org/who-we-are/

Such a great way forward I only wish more would do it

I completely agree! Sadly, ahimsa dairies are currently in the minority but hopefully, the more awareness ahimsa/slaughter free dairies get, the more people will choose to support them instead and more dairies will choose to switch to this compassionate way of farming instead!

Wow just read that although i wont drink milk this is a complete no brainer what a wonderful place and run by peace loving harre krisherner 👍👍👍👍🐮

I Completely agree Joeann! As I said before, I truly believe that ahimsa/slaughter free dairies are going to be part of the future alongside cellular agriculture and plant based alternatives and are a key to helping end the cruel factory farms of today! Bless you!

Badgers are not causing any problems! Once again the problems lie with human beings but we live in a blame culture!

Lazy farmers leaving there livestock out in all weathers and cramped conditions for their livestock and too many antibiotics given to their livestock!

They have to blame something and so they have decided to pick on the humble badger!

The humble innocent badger is an environmental wonder!

If politicians are not organizing and becoming involved in wars they make war on the animal kingdom!

And once again say no to real bear skins, and say yes to fake fur for the King's guard, (whilst it lasts!)

Say long live the Republic! It's long overdue!

Completely agree with you! There is currently an official parliamentary petition to help ban the import of fur into the UK, including for the "kings guards caps" if you are interested. The link is here: https://petition.parliment.uk/petitions/655134

I never drink milk! I m allergic!

I do have yogurt, because it's a "culture", whereas milk makes me throw up!

I have allergies probably due to our damaged and polluted environment

I am a vegetarian

I am old and bedridden, a hippie in my youth!

There is absolutely no need to be cruel to dairy cows but I know that they are treated often with great brutality and there is no need to separate the mother cow from her babies because there is plenty for all providing this human beings are not greedy and that has been the problem greediness by many members of the human race and it got worse all through the 20th century and it's abominable now!

I completely agree with you Madelaine Sherwood! Have you heard of ahimsa dairies at all. Here is a link to help better explain: https://westmidlands.ahimsamilk.org/who-we-are/

I truly believe that they are the future of far kinder dairies, alongside cellular agriculture and plant based alternatives!

Yes it has been proved that Badgers are not the criminals spreading this awful virus but the Farmers who do not vaccinate their cows against TB because they do not care for their animals. This has been shown in photos taken under cover of herdsmen kicking and pushing cows too lame to stand up and by taking their calves away too soon causing their mothers extreme distress which in turn must effect the quality of their milk and meat. We must protect the gentle beautiful Badgers !😡

Absolutely brilliant, Protect, about time someone was brave enough to publish this....

Good job for speaking out. Simple question how many times on our lives do we need mothers milk? So why are we taking it from animals? It is an industrialised way of maximising profit and reducing costs by no inoculation. It has little to do with welfair or quality food production. We have been veggie sinc 1980 and vegan for many years. Vote with your feet STOP buying the products that are directly linked with industrialised death done in our name. These people kill for fun and profit at all costs.

Maybe we should stop consuming cheese and milk? If we all went vegan the problem would be solved.

I don't like the badger killing any more than you do, but i can't see that there is anything I can do to stop it. It's hard to see how we can do without dairy products and cattle. I have badgers on my land and in try large garden. I put dog food out for foxes and badgers when the ground is frozen and its always gone next morning.

When I first became vegetarian, I had to cook literally just vegetables, there were no alternatives on the market until I discovered soya in a health food shop. Linda McCartney then emerged as my hero and others gradually followed. Today, even supermarkets are forced into supplying range upon range of alternatives to meat and dairy! It is so easy now! The true difficulty for most people (myself included) has been to reject what we were brought up on and re-educate our taste buds! Not healthy? I gave birth to 2 very large healthy babies (9lb 12 and 10lb 2ozs! Quite a feat!) At almost 75years now, still going quite well! We certainly can do without meat or dairy!

I agree and I wish I could give up meat and dairy foods but just cannot like the milk alternatives taste. Hardly eat any meat now especially beef and lamb. Never eat Pork. Trying to give up chicken and only buy proven free range eggs.

Bless you Rosemary and Susie Bowers! Have you heard of ahimsa dairies at all? Here is a link: https://westmidlands.ahimsamilk.org/who-we-are/

I truly believe a combination of ahimsa style dairies, cellular agriculture (cellular agriculture is a really exciting emerging field too!) and plant based foods are the future! I myself am vegetarian and almost vegan. I still drink milk but have replaced at least 50% to 75% of that with plant based now. The only meat and fish in our house is for our cats and dog. I do accept that there are people who may not be able to fully give up meat, fish, dairy and/or eggs for various reasons such as medical reasons but if everyone could at least reduce their intake of it, it would really help us all. The documentary "meat me halfway" is a good example!

As I've written before, here in Switzerland where I live as an ex-pat, there are NO badger culls - and there are a LOT of cows producing milk for chocolate, and for cheese fondue! This "cull" is a massacre with no scientific proof that the badgers are responable for TB spreading in cows! As Stephen writes, most TB infection is spread from cow to cow.

Go vegan, it's the only way. We do not need animal products. All farming is exploiting sentient beings, no matter how "nice" "free range" or whatever other euphemisms are used. Wildlife suffers because of it too.

ON A DIFFERENT NOTE I HAVE EMAILED KEVIN FOSTER ABOUT THE CRIMES THAT ARE COMMITED BY HUNTS AND RAPTOR KILLERS. KEVIN FOSTER IS RUNNING FOR MAYOR IN THE NORTH YORKSHIRE MAYOR ELECTIONS AS THE GREEN PARTY CANDIDATE. HE WILL REVIEW POLICING POLICIES WITH THE NEW CHIEF CONSTABLE IN TARGETING RURAL CRIME. ANY KILLING OFF WILDLIFE IS CRUEL/WRONG AND A CRIME NOMATTER WHAT THE AUTHORTIES SAY. THE DAIRY FARMERS DO NOT WANT TO SPEND MONEY ONJ INJECTING THEIR CATTLE TO COMBAT TB.
